Post MAGFest Depression / New Staff Blog

So MAGfest has come and gone, and we're all very sad :((( I had a really amazing time this year, and I'm sure everyone else who went will agree. I'm gonna make a PROPER MAGFest reflections post sometime later this week (or early next week, depending on how stuff works out), but for now I just wanted to post about the new and exciting stuff they're already planning for NEXT YEAR'S MAGFest!

This is the new (as of Jan 2009) Magfest staff blog where we'll be posting up news and info, and bouncing ideas off of you guys. I'm Dom, the new Music Coordinator of Magfest. Expect the same insane music from years past but more of it and even more badass.

I think I'm speaking for everyone in saying that Magfest 7 ROCKED and was the best one so far. We had 3 nights of concerts, jamspace, a chiptunes rave, tons of impromptu and scheduled bands, insane gaming, insane LAN, and all around good time. Plus we had excellent game industry presence, awesome panels. We had 1350+ attendees, almost 30% up from last year. This year we had the most game music bands ever.

I am starting up this Magfest staff blog to give everyone on Magfest staff the opportunity to communicate what our plans and ideas for next year are, and to let you guys give us feedback and suggestions. Keep in mind, any of the stuff you see on this blog can change in an instant - Magfest is incredibly flexible and we'll change stuff up until the day before if we feel like it'll work better.

Here's a laundry list of our biggest things that we're looking at for next year:

JAMSPACE: The biggest changes relate to scheduled events in Jamspace: Next year Jamspace will return to be ONLY 24/7 unscheduled jamming. There will be no concerts of any kind in there, just freeform jamming as it was meant to be. Having scheduled events in there was a hack to get around not having the support to put them in other rooms and limiting the amount of jam times. Next year we're going to have more space for the other events.

NEW CHIPTUNES RAVE: If you weren't in Jamspace on Friday or Saturday night, you missed almost a dozen fantastic chiptunes artists (including the unbelievable Renard + Virt headline) rock the hell out of a packed-to-capacity, insane, glowstick-wielding, breakdancing crowd. It turns out that Magfest DOES like raves after all. Next year, we're not only bringing this back, but we're moving it into the main concert hall and doing a full-on non-stop hardcore chiptunes+dj rave - for real. Think same energy as this year but bigger and more badass. I need you all to pimp this out that next year's rave is NOT to be missed.

OPEN MIC CONCERT: One the cool side-effects of Jamspace was that it gets people together and, once in a while, spawns bands like Metroid Metal. The Open Mic concert is a chance for those going the extra step to prepare stuff to be able to show it off at Magfest. To this effect the Open mic concerts will probably be moving somewhere that's not jamspace and getting a bit more official-ized, maybe even moving to the main concert hall during the day. They will still be open for any group that wants to sign up. We're going to work on some details that also don't step on bands which need practice time.

STAFFING: Our staff is brilliant and hardworking, but we need more! If you're even remotely interested in helping out, this is the year we're going to need you the most because Magfest is going to explode. Magfest 8 is the year we've been waiting for. We're looking for talented people to step up and take charge of areas they are passionate about.

MEDIA OPS: We started up a new department at Magfest headed by Kroze and Xerol called Media Ops. Media Ops is currently gathering up over 100 hours of DV video, multitrack audio, pictures, sites, blogs, and anything for use in future promotion. This is also and archive for guys like PBC, X-Strike, ScrewAttack, and anyone else who wants stuff. The idea is that you send us a terabyte drive, or send e.g. $150 and we'll buy one for you. We'll load it up full of uncompressed DV video clips of interesting things with good audio, then ship the hard drive back to you for consumption.

On that note as well, I've started up a Wiki page for any news sites or threads or videos we find from here on out. Thanks to ANYONE who posted something about Magfest:

PROMOTION: I will also say that our future promotion plans are bigger in scope than anything we've ever done before. I will need everyone's help on this getting things posted to sites. Expect really really big things for next year's marketing Blitz, which will probably kick in around August to September.

Magfest is the anti-convention and we intend to keep it that way - nothing to us is more important than keeping that grassroots user-driven feel that makes Magfest so unique amongst all other gaming and music events. HELP US ON OUR ROAD TOWARDS INEVITABLE WORLD DOMINATION.

Ok so you all may have noticed AR's been down for a while. Well, Avaris actually told me while we were at MAGFest that AR was back up. I talked to Xaleph just now and he doesn't actually know why AR is actually back up, but it is.

We also haven't been able to contact our host [he won't even answer his emails] during the downtime, however Xaleph DOES have a backup plan to move the site if this happens again, so don't worry!

Also, happy new year! 2009 should see many new cool things happening with AR, like dev.animeremix going live! And hell, maybe some new songs too!

So first of all, I'd like to say thanks to everyone who came out and submitted stuff to ReMx:ThaSauce over the past few weeks. We really appreciate it, guys. There's so much great music out there just waiting to be heard, and we wanna make sure it reaches as many people as possible.
I've gone ahead and posted what I have TAGGED AND READY to be posted in the thread on the QC forums. This isn't a concrete list of what I have, or what's going to be direct posted, but more an idea of where I am RIGHT NOW. Expect some updates to this thread, and the QC forums in general over the next week or so. Our Arbiters are probably going to have to come out of hibernation for a bit, too =P

On top of that there's been some dicussion about reforming VGDJ @ OCR, and it brought up the reminder that WE haven't done a podcast in some time. I'd been busy with finishing up school, and starla had a few things she's been taking care of too. I think we're ready to start getting something going again, and I know I said I'd have one ready by last Friday, but really there's just so much to cover we're having trouble fitting it all into 1 show. Anywhere we're pretty close to (if not totally done with) ironing out what we plan to put in the next show, so you guys should expect one VERY VERY SOON...but seriously.

Lastly I'd still like to remind people that, even though I got a good ammount of submissions lately, they're still pretty far and few between overall. So keep'em comin'. We wanna make sure all the music we can gets to as many people as possible, and the best way to do that is to have a constant flow of stuff coming in.

We're just in a dry spell for submissions (unofficial count right now is 1 to be QC'd and 1 to be posted, but don't quote me on that because I'm not exactly checking RIGHT NOW). That in mind...SUBMIT. If you submitted before and have new stuff? Submit! If you submitted before and got rejected? SUBMIT! If you know someone who has a song that they've finished but haven't posted it anywhere or got it rejected from OCReMix? Tell them to submit! If you submitted a song and it didn't get posted and it didn't go to the qc RESUBMIT! It happens sometime (except you, Bren. I got you.)

An OverClocked Christmas: Volume 2 - Unofficial Christmas Album Project

As many of you know, last year, I headed a project called An OverClocked Christmas, which brought together some very talented individuals who gave us eleven tracks of very cool Christmas music. Well, I'm at it again this year. I've started An OverClocked Christmas: Volume 2, and it's the next logical step.
It's an open project, so anyone who is interested in contributing a track can submit a WIP (by the first WIP date, of course) for the project. It's a small project, and runs until Monday, December 22. The first WIP deadline is Wednesday, December 10 at 11:59pm. Which means, I have to have it in my inbox by then (see thread at OCR for more info).

Anyone interested in joining the project, please check the first post, and post in the thread to let me know that you're joining so I can add you to the main post. Also, there is no limit on the number of songs you can do, as long as you can handle the work load, I'm always happy to accept multiple songs from the same artist.

Muhmood recently released a new EP, the soundtrack to a short animation called Tamara & Demon through "Enoughrecords" a scene.org hosted netlabel. Highly Recommended.

Recently I came upon a delightful New-Wave/Synthpop styled netlabel called Nonstop Nonsense NetLab. Their latest effort is by Retax Gorgon, nnnl18 AI.

Another new find is a Chinese netlabel called Bypass, which was founded by an audio engineer who enjoys producing a lot of material under different pseudonyms. Check out their latest offering by Foss with Moss, [bp008] Warmness.

I present Soft Phase, a new Nordic netlabel, and Planet Boelex & Lisa's Antenna's sfp01 Little World. Highly Recommended.

As always, Sociopath-Recordings is constantly releasing mutant IDM and breakcore EPs. Check out the recent Mithra release rather than the latest for a taste of the more palatable side to the genre, [SRmp3 108] Childhood Remixes.

There have been a LOT more, especially new discoveries, but I'm getting pretty hungry right about now, and I don't want you to feel too overwhelmed. Check ya'll later.

Wardriver Releases war004: 'Garden Art' by OverCoat

Wardriver is pleased to announce the release of our fourth official album, Garden Art. VERSUS Compo is a ReMix Competition website that focuses around user created competitions and earning Battle Points, the VC currency. VERSUS Compo started as a friendly competition between two ReMixers that gained a lot of popularity. Soon, a lot of ReMixers started their own VERSUS Compos and they wanted a website dedicated to it. So one of the original ReMixers started constructing this website and has finally finished.
The original Compos that started the website are defaulted and are the classic Single Battle Compo, which pits 2 ReMixers against each other in friendly competition, and the winner is decided through public polls. The other is Championship Compo, which is the website's tournament compo. Some compos require Battle Points to enter, while others are free to enter.

08/08/08 marks the release of RE: Discoveries, the first full-length album from the 8-Bit Metal project. Okay, so I’m a year and a half late, but you guys know all the crazy stuff that’s happened in the past year and a half –I have not forgotten about my album(s), and last weekend I finished recording all my best Kwakfests, and I’m releasing a few previews as Youtube videos.

mithius releases ''The Story of Hyrule''; 44 track arrangement/original album.

A few days ago, on a couple of forums, community member mithius released "The Story of Hyrule." An epic 44 track album, comprised of both arrangements from Zelda 1 through a Link to the Past, as well as a number of original tracks. The post was long and kind of disjointed, the website was a bit "1996", but the music was absolutely AMAZING. That's when I decided to start work on a proper website and hosting to really showcase mithius's hard work.
I want to point out that, even though it's hosted under the ReMix:ThaSauce subdomain, this album is NOT affiliated with R:TS or ThaSauce at all. I simply wanted to make sure this album got proper presentation. All the music and story on the site is by mithius and mithius alone. All I did was give him a website and some hosting. (I would've like to give him a subdomain, but that's just not an option at this point.)

Anyway, give it a listen an enjoy an epic musical journey through the lands of Hyrule!

This week we will be holding a special compo. The theme is a samplepack containing all the sound effects and voices from Team Fortress 2. Please be aware that there are a large number of samples and going through them may be somewhat overwhelming - which is one of the reasons why this compo will be open for one week. Starting this Sunday, you may begin your song. Please have it uploaded by next Sunday, July 27th by 9 PM Pacific / Midnight Eastern.

This just in from The Megas, they're heading toward the Northeastern United States on tour in the near future. Here's a quote from their MySpace bulletin about the tour:

"Hey guys - our Northeastern US tour is just 2 months away, and we need to start locking down some shows around 32 Bit Genocide! We'll be starting in Baltimore on August 16th and working our way north, depending on where the shows come through.

If you have any suggestions or contacts at venues, please let us know ASAP! We're also down to play a few house parties or barbecues, especially midweek (it is summertime, after all!) So if you'd like to put something together, please let us know.

We're also looking to play at arcades and video game stores, so if anyone can give us some leads in that area, make with the info!

Powerglove tour going strong

Just wanted to remind you guys, Powerglove is still touring the US all the way until their July 5th performance with DragonForce. I just saw them the other day here in Orlando, and I'll have to say I'm still soar. After missing most of their set at last years MAGFest it was really good to be able to hear the whole set, get all my stuff signed, buy their new shirt, and hang out and talk a bit with the guys. All for a measly $10 cover charge.

This release contains 16 remixed songs from Kazuo Sawa's original score for the 1989 NES game, all arranged with each dodge ball team's country of origin in mind.

Project Producer Mustin said, "I'm excited about releasing this project in conjunction with Aksys games and their Brawlers release. I hope the music pays suitable tribute to the Super Dodge Ball video game we all played as kids."

seriously folks, give kaneel some time on your speakers, you won't be disappointed. he's been doing the netlabel thing for a while and has been released on some of the heavy hitters in the scene (this release still on petite&jolie =) ).

Nine Inch Nails - The Slip
Reznor released his new album for free (actually for free, no graded sales gimmick), under a creative commons license. A bit weak in the production department, but for 2 months of work and for free it's not bad, considering the source.

Dark and filled with heavy IDM and DnB elements, this is actually pretty good considering it's on sociopath. thumbs up

thumbs down... this really is mostly a wall of noise... but hey, it's hard to stand out in breakcore

SRmp3 081 Rekombinacja - Notoryczni Wyznawcy Ewidentnych Uproszczen
Mutant breakcore that is probably a little too self indulgent, but not nearly as harsh on the ears as Sigma God Metal

SRmp3 080 Skodvolt - Rhubarb Wrecker
Glitch/IDM influenced, with a few samples from movies or something, not wholly unenjoyable but definitely not for the breakcore beginner.

tube'|122 Entia Non - Lilt
Lilt sounds more like incidental music from a film than it does anything else, complete with the sound effects. a very stripped down and ambient feel, very reminiscent of blade runner. thumbs up!

tube'|121 Mother - Self Deprivation
this is a bit more experimental than Lilt, but the ambient soundscapes are very well done, although the melodies that play on top of them sound like the hallucinations one would have if they actually were in a self deprivation chamber. Very dark feel, but not as accessable as other test tube releases.

Mimonot has a penchant for offering some excellent music from the other side of the planet, it's unfortunate that i am a monolinguist, and thus cannot wholly enjoy many of the releases which i'm telling you about. Mora is a downtempo album that sits well next to the best of the west

It's hard to believe on this day 3 years ago a little brainstorm of mind became a reality. Looking back on it now, I'd have to say that ThaSauce has, in different respects, both fallen short of my expections and greatly exceeded them. Our userbase is constantly growing, we're poised to make 1,000,000 hits within the next few month, but still there's a lot of room for improvement and a LOT of work to be done.
The first thing I'd like to give you guys today is 3 new mixes up on ReMix:ThaSauce. They are 'Escape into Twilight' from NiGHTs by Skrypnyk, 'In Search of Light' from Mega Man X4 by long-time OverClocked ReMixer and Judge DarkeSword, and 'Pixelated Tales' from Tales of Symphonia by newcomer Showroom Dummy. I'm extremely pleased in how far R:TS has come, and we will continue to bring you guys excellent works from artist around the community that don't quite fit into OCReMix's guidelines for whatever reason.

You will, however notice that R:TS has been rather stagnant. That's partly to blame on my part, but it's largely because we simply don't have the submissions coming in. As of today we've barely recieved ANY submissions, save ones we've asked people for personally, all year. If you visit and enjoy ReMix:ThaSauce spread the word! The only way we can continue to provide you guys with music is if we have music to provide, and the only way we're going to get more is if more people know. So if you know someone who's remix can't get on OCR for whatever reason and has never heard of R:TS, be sure to send them are way as we'd be MORE than happy to have them.

Another thing I wanna mention is shirts. The initial run of shirts sold out a LOT quicker than I had ever anticipated. Since then I've been working on ways to get enough money for a second run AND working feverishly on a new design (a work in progress of which is displayed above). I'm glad to announce that as of today I'm am working toward the step of completing the logo and readying the order. This means that I NEED TO KNOW what sizes to order. If you want one of the shirts, please reply with the size you want. And remeber the bigger the order is for me, the cheaper the shirts are for everyone.

I plan on updating this post throughout the day, so be sure to check back later.

"After stewing about a live incarnation of Metroid Metal for some years now, it's official. MM Live is happening!

"The buzz became a project just after Magfest of this year. Chunk and I yapped about the possibilities of a live project the entire trip home with poop happily sleeping in the backseat. After a few weeks of conspiring, we've got the team together and you will have the opportunity of seeing a live version of the Metroid Metal tunes in the not-so-far future with the following lineup:
